Where are my USB 2 Ports

Hello

I'm not vrey good on hardware problems. Anyway...

I have a AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3000+ and I always thought that my
ports were USB 2.

Yesterday, I plugged in my brand new digital camera and I got a windows pop
up saying that things would go faster if I connected the camera to a USB 2
port.

I've tried finding this info for myself but the AMD site is not very helpful
and Windows >System> Management only tells me that I have USB Hubs without
specifying USB 1 or 2

Could sm put me straight on this please.

How do you know what USB 2 ports you actually have with Windows?

Thanks

First, look in Device Manager.
Open your Start Menu, right-click on My Computer, select Properties. Launch
Device Manager.
Expand the category "Universal Serial Bus Controllers".
You should see entries for "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller",
or something like that. The key word here is "Enhanced", which indicated USB
2.0. If all you see are entries like "Standard Universal PCI to USB Host
Controller", your USB ports are running as USB 1.1.

Are you running Windows XP SP2? If I recall correctly, one of the features
of SP2 was provision of generic USB2 drivers.
If you are running SP2, and you see no enhanced controllers, you can try
removing the USB hubs from Device Manager, then rebooting to let XP
rediscover the hubs and reinstall drivers.

Hi

No, they are standard but here is the crunch.

Since posting, we installed a USB 2 card with four ports today.

It seems to be working ok as my digital camera etc is recognized except that
the same message comes up.

So, to sum up. I'm running Windows XP with SP2, have a brand new camera and
USB 2 lead, a card with four USB 2 hubs and the message

'Use a USB 2 connection for a faster download still comes up'

So if I have understood your answer, when I put in the USB 2 card today,
Windows should have recognized it as a USB 2 card.

But it didn't.

Therefore , I am reluctant to remove the hubs and reinstall drivers.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

The third link here, lists a "Cleanup" procedure you do in Safe Mode. The idea
is, to delete the devices in question, from Device Manager. They are re-enumerated
on the next reboot, and Windows installs its built-in drivers. Whatever database
has been built, tracking certain devices that have been plugged in, should get
wiped out too, which may allow proper detection the next time they are plugged in.

You _are_ running Service Pack 2 on your XP install, right?

I would check the BIOS options to ensure that USB 2.0 is available and
enabled for the on-board ports. I'd also consider that my motherboard might
need drivers to run its ports as 2.0 ports.

As for the newly installed USB port card - did that come with drivers?

Assuming you have XPSP2 installed, this sounds awfully like a driver issue,
or possibly that the ports have been detected wrongly - there's some good
advice on this thread already to that end.
