When Upgrading Setup stops at Analyzing Computer- HELP!

L

Layla

I am upgrading from Windows 98 SE. I have tried about 8
or 9 times to complete this now and I can never get past
about 75% through the "Analyzing Your Computer" bar. I
have tried to just check system compatibility by itself
without setup and it also gets stuck, although its at the
DVD Player part. The about winXP screens keep changing so
its not freezing or not responding. The timer stays where
it is and the bar doesnt move. I have waited up to 2
hours for it to do something, so im getting pretty
frustrated now.
I have went through all the help files at microsoft and
none of them fit my problem. (Im not getting any errors)

Can someone PLEASE help me?

Layla;
Since it stops at the DVD section, uninstall the DVD player which is
most likely incompatible with Windows XP.
Uninstall your antivirus unless you are absolutely sure it is
compatible with Windows XP as well.

Hi, first of all thanks for your reply.
I did what you said and uninstalled the DVD player. The
antivirus program is already uninstalled. I bought a 2004
version and am waiting to get XP installed before I
install that. I tried setup again and got the "setup
cannot create a temporary folder" error. Ive read on this
board about it and the reply was to call microsoft about
it but I cant because its a long distance # and we dont
have long distance :(

So what should I do?

Layla;
At this point, you may be better off backing up the important data and
starting over with a Clean Installation of Windows XP.

Clean Installation
Disconnect all peripherals (camera, printer, scanner, etc)
Disconnect network/modem cable.
Go to BIOS and set CDROM as boot device before hard drive.
Insert Windows XP CD and reboot.
At "Press any key to boot to CDROM" quickly press a key and follow the
prompts for a Clean installation:
http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/windowsxp_sg_clean.asp
You will need to insert the Windows 98 CD in step 4b as qualifying
media.
Delete all partitions in step 5 if you desire to erase all data on the
hard drive.
Partitioning and formatting will be done automatically.
All data will be destroyed, back-up important data first.

Enable or install firewall BEFORE connecting network cable.

Install ALL Critical Windows Updates:
Start/All Programs/Windows Update

After you are finished, you will need to load the appropriate drivers.

If your computer was shipped with Windows XP, these procedures may or
may not apply.
Check your manual or contact the computer manufacturer for more
details.
