When selecting cells in Excel 07 why doesn't it highlight?

I am using Microsoft 2007. When I open up an Excel sheet I will try to select
certain cells buy I cannot see the area highlighted. What do I need to do to
show the area that I have selected?
 
I find that on some monitors the light gray used to highlight the selected
cells is almost too light to see. I complained during the beta testing, but
apparently it was too late to take action, and not enough other users found
it problematic.
