when selecting "add new members" to create a distribution list, the names in
the address or contacts do not match the names of my actual contact list.

Do they bear any resemblance at all? What version of Outlook? Is yuor
Contacts folder enabled as an address book?

i believe it is enabled

Don't believe. Look. RIght-click the Contacts folder, choose Properties,
select the Outlook Address Book tab and examine the box labeled "Show this
folder as an e-mail Address Book". Is it checked or not?
