When I type a word document starting from the top where the insert

point is, I sometimes go back and try to put a centered title above the
material I typed before. Word won't let me type above the previous material
unless I move it down by hitting the enter key. Why does this happen, and how
can I insert a centered title. Thanks.

This is something like putting a chair with its back against the wall but
there it's easy to see why you can't put another chair behind it.

You have started at the top of the page and placed text. It is at the top.
So, you have to move the existing text down and insert a paragraph, create a
text frame and place text in that, or create a header space above the text
and put the text in that. Each method has its uses and
advantages/disadvantages.

I suspect the first method is the most suitable for you present purpose.

You already know the start of that. Place the cursor on the top left of the
existing text. Press enter. This creates a new paragraph above the existing
text. Go to Format Paragraph and elect to centre the text.
Here you can also select other things such as line spacing and space before
and after.
