When I type a letter...the next letter disappears /Microsoft word

in microsoft word....when i make a mistake...the newly typed letter takes the
place of the old letter and I end up retyping the whole line again

You're in Overtype mode. Press the Insert key (again, since that's
probably how you got there) to return to Insert mode.
