When I Send attachments the recipients are unable to open them. Instead they
get a message telling them to find out what program created them but they are
just regular files; jpg, doc, xls etc. If I send them from my hotmail account
there is no problem. Help!

You didn't mention what version of outlook you are using, but here are some
things to watch out for.

1) Set message format to plain text or html (see tools > options > mail
format)

2) Consider disabling Word as your e-mail editor (does not apply to Outlook
2007, for others see tools > options > mail format)

3) if the names are coming from your contacts folder, make sure they are not
marked to received outlook rich text only (e.g. open contact record. double
click on e-mail address to check)

I have the reverse problem. Every attachment that I save, saves to an
unspecified format and asks the question of which program to open the
attachment with. Even if in know the file type and rename it to the
appropriate extension it takes two or three times for Excel, Word,
PowerPoint, etc. to function and then sometimes the file still won't open.
This is Office 2007 running on Vista RC1 5600 and this occurs when I receive
an email with attachment from anyone. Is there reverse of this fix for this
type of situation? I pop email via Outlook. No one on the receiving end of my
emails has indicated any problem with opening attachments. Also, is there a
batch way to change outbound email across contacts as per your instructions
below?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well, first I would ask you if you are running the final version of Office
2007 on the RC1 of Vista. (Basically if you are using Beta2* or older of
Office 2007 on Vista RC1, then you are running an unsupported
configuration.)

* Microsoft released a technical refresh of Office 2007 Beta 2. This is the
first rev that was deemed compatible when dealing with beta on beta.

I am running Beta2. I have not received any notice of availability of final
version. I was told yesterday that some stores have the released version but
I haven't seen any. I would not think this should be an issue though,
supported or not.

OK, I updated to the fnal release of Office 2007 Ultimate on Jan.31 as well
as the released version of Vista and still have the same problem. When I
right click and save, it saves the file and regardless of app, takes off the
extension and the file won't open automatically until I rename the file to
the appropriate extension (this occurs even with non-MS apps like
Acrobat/Reader, and sometimes named files with extensions will try to open in
Reader).

If I open the file in Outlook, as opposed to saving it from Outlook, the
file opens. But, if I save it in the right-click method, I have to go through
the process, which ain't fun. I have looked high and low in Outlook and
online to find out how to fix this issue, but without success. The previous
suggestions on changing the message format did not work. And the third would
mean that I would have to go through a thousand plus records one by one to
check that. The default is to let Outlook determine the best sending format.

I posted this a month ago and have continued looking but without success--

I have a similar problem using both Outlook Express and Yahoo Mail. When I
attach Word documents, the file extension .doc appears on the attachment, but
at the other end the recipient gets an attachment with the file extension
..dat and they cannot open it.

The weird thing is this doesn't happen all the time. I sent the same
attachment to different people from my Yahoo; some got it and could open it;
some couldn't?? I sent it to myself just to check was it okay an i could
open it with no problem

is it something on my computer or theirs???

I have not received anything from Microsoft on the issue. It is still the
same today. I am running Vista Ultimate and Office 2007. Outlook attachments
do not automatically save the extension when I right click and save a file. I
always have to remember to type in the extension so that it will open on a
single click (my setting for my mouse). Otherwise it saves the file and takes
anything after a period as the file type (like and excel file name PO12.2)
and calls it a 2 File in the File type. Absent that it will take the first
word of the file name (like Purchase Order 072607a) and refers to the file as
Purchase File in the File type. If I forget to take that action on the save,
I have to rename the file with the proper extension and then it will launch
properly.
