When I doubleclick a word (officeXP) file, it doesn't open.

I have several pc's in our company network on which it became impossible to
open a word document. This problem disappears after a logoff-logon but comes
back from time to time.
The problem is not limited to one file but all word (.doc) files.
All these files seem to be ok, I can open them if I first open word and then
use the "file open" option or drag them into the application. (using office
XP)
The "opens with" field is correctly set to "ms word"

Try recreating the file associations by going to Start/Run and running
this command:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.
