when I do email mailmerge any attachments disappear why is this?

When mailmerging from outlook 2003 I attach a document in the attachment but
once the mailmerge has been processed the attachement (whatever it is eg word
zip pdf) does not get sent to any of the recipients.
 
That's normal, expected behavior. No version of Office does mail merge with both a cover letter and an attachment. You'd need a third-part product for that; see http://www.slipstick.com/addins/mail.htm#massmail
