When I change the HDD Windows XP won't start!

I recently posted a message because I have a problem migrating Windows XP
from one disk to another. I received various replies but apparently I wasn't
clear enough so I will give a little more information this time.

The problem: I have a Pentium 4 1,8Ghz with Windows XP Pro SP1a and all
patches applied in a 40GB 5400 Rpm IDE HDD. Recently I bought a 40GB 7200
Rpm IDE HDD and I wanted to replace the 5400rpm disk with the new 7200rpm.
The two drives are Western Digital.

What did I do?: I have PowerQuest Drive Image 2002 so I did a bootable disk
and copy to it the DOS version of the program. Drive Image has an option
that says "Copy Drives" that exactly copies one drive to another (it copies
everything, even the boot sector). I had used this option before with a
Windows 98 SE and worked perfectly so I didn't see why it wouldn't work with
XP but....

When the copy process finished, I removed the 5400rpm drive (it was not
useful anymore), I jumper the 7200rpm drive as the 5400rpm so everything was
the same then I turn up my computer and.

What was the problem?: the Bios OK, it detected the drive as before, still
no problems. Them Windows XP started to boot, everything seems to be right
(no blue screens appears) them the screen flashed as always and the Welcome
Logo appears with the mouse pointer, the HDD led was working and then.
nothing, the led was off, the Welcome Logo was still there and won't go away
and the estrange thing was that the mouse was working properly (so I think
the computer didn't hung up).

OK I said, "I restart in "Safe Mode" and see what the problem is". I
restarted, pressed F8 while initiating, I selected Safe Mode, Windows was
starting up normally as before. Them the Desktop appeared saying Safe Mode
in the corners as always and suddenly the Welcome Logo appeared!!! And it
will never go!

Them I formatted the drive connected the old drive and made an Image of it
(with Drive Image again) I restored to the new drive but it happened the
same as with "Drive Copy"

I thought that may be the old drive was damaged during the copy, but if I
set it to boot up Windows starts perfectly (now I'm writing from the old
disk) My Windows Xp doesn't like to be cloned!!!

From that point onwards I tried almost every alternative I had except
reinstalling Windows.

Does someone know why this happen??? And how can I fix it???

Thanks very much.

if I remember right WD drives come with a floppy that will enable you to
copy one drive to another letting you do pretty much what you're trying to
do, why not try using it instead of Drive Image?

Gabriel, sounds like the problem here:
http://www.powerquest.com/support/primus/id3378.cfm
I've had the same problem as you with DI2002 and some how got hold of a
different release of it and it works fine. Don't think I ever tried the
suggestions in the support document. If you want I can email you the file
or files, just remove the nospam in my address and send me an email.
