Someone else is attempting to use one of my files but it just keeps saying
"data may be lost", then after several attempts to get it to recalculate it
finally uses up all the memory in their PC and they have to reboot, only to
start the problem all over again. My original file was created in Office 2000
and they said they have Office 97.

Don't exactly know, but one thing: be sure you're
friend is not trying to run from an A: drive - you'll
have big troubles...

copy the file to your C: drive and open from there.

You may want to try a different version of excel to see if it can open it.
(xl2002+ may work--maybe even xl2k)

And OpenOffice has a better reputation for opening files that earlier versions
of excel couldn't.

(http://www.openoffice.org, a 60-65 meg download or a CD)

If the file is really important, there are commercial recovery services. I've
never used it, but you might want to check into:
