I am running:

O/S - XP Prof SP2
Access - 2003 SP1
Machine - 2.4 Ghz Celeron, 480 mb Ram
Database version 2002

As soon as I go in to report design view all of Access suddenly goes
in to 5 to 8 second response time to all mouse actions and keystrokes.

It's so bad I'm contemplating abandoning 2003 and doing all work
Access 2002

Is anyone else experiencing this or is it just me ?

Any suggestions ?

Many thanks in advance

Hi Tony,

There's got to be some problem on your machine. I'm certainly not
experiencing such behavior (I use Access 2003 at work and Access 2002 at
home).

My first suggestion is to perform a Detect and Repair, which you should be
able to initiate from the Help menu. If that does not cure the problem, then
you may need to completely uninstall Office 2003, and then re-install it and
apply the service packs to Office and the JET database engine.

Hi Tony,

Are you experiencing this behavior for any report that you open in design
view, in various databases? If it is just one (or all) report(s) in a
particular database, then you might have some corruption going on.

Jerry's suggestion to disable the Name Autocorrupt option is a good one, but
I believe that effect shows up only when opening an object in preview or
design mode. Once the object is open, I wouldn't think that this option would
lead to the delays you describe.

It seems to be any report (no matter how simple) in any database

Two things to check:

If your database is split..then try opening a table that is in the back
end...(of cause..you open this table in the front end)....minimize this
table..and now try the design mode.

2nd thing to check is your default printer. If it is a network printer, or a
printer that is NOT availing, then ms-access will attempt to connect to the
printer (for layout information.

As a result of this, my default printer is actually a pdf printer...and not
one that actually exists....

Check/try both of the above issues...

Tony:

This may be a longshot, but I saw this behavior last year, and here's
what caused it for me: Every 10 seconds or so, my laptop was searching
the network for the XYZ printer ... but it didn't exist on that network,
so the search failed after about 5 seconds of screen-freeze, until the
next time it searched, and froze again for 5 seconds.

It's a weird one, but it's worth a look. Try deleting all printers that
point to networks to which you're not connected. Of course, if you're
on a desktop, that's probably not the problem. If so, nevermind.
