Whats the warranty length on Hitachi T7K250 SATAII?

I

Ian R

Hi

I had presumed that many drives these days come with a 3 or 5 year warranty.

Yesterday I ordered 3 x T7K250 SATA II drives which have had great reviews -
but on checking my order progress I noticed in very small print that they
only have a 1yr warranty!

Is this correct?

Ive tried the Hitachi website but cant find any reference to the length of
the warranty.

If it is just 1 yr I'd rather cancel the order and go for a WD or Samsung of
similar spec. Absolute fastest drives on the block is not essential for my
use as they're only intended for a RAID 0 short term storage. I'd prefer
greater reliability and a longer term period of cover for my money.

Thanks for your time and any info.

Thanks a lot for the info + the link Andy - Great News!

I also noticed the relevant line "Deskstar Product, all 8MB cache buffer
models - 3 years"

You need to verify if the drive is a OEM or RETAIL version. The warranty on
both of these will typically differ.

Do the online warranty check as soon as you have the serial numbers.
There must be some reason why they added that warranty statement.
They may be OEM's or old stock and the warranty be retailer only.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all your replies.

I did a warranty status quick check on www.hitachigst.com

The drives which arrived this morning all come back as expiring on 31st May
2009.

BUT underneath it also says...

"While the warranty Quick Check may show this hard drive has a valid
warranty, NOT ALL WARRANTIES ARE TRANSFERABLE, therefore this Quick Check is
not a guarantee of warranty entitlement."

So with this statement I am none the wiser. It almost defeats the whole
point of having the warranty check facility.

Anyone know how I can check for sure?

What do they mean by "transferable"? I don't intend to sell them to anyone
else.

Also they arrived at my door on 12 Sept so I would expect the warranty to be
valid from the day they arrive not from the date of manufacture!! If I
bought
a TV or a car I expect the warranty to start from the day I pick it up.
Since when do warranties start from the date of manufacture!!

The warranty check also says "Sold to GEO - EMEA" Does anyone know what
this means?

Cheers

Ian

That is usual in the disk drive business with vendor warranties.
Manufatcurers usually add some time for the drive to be sold, but
are in no way obligated to. The underlying problem is that the
manufacturers are not notified whent he drive is sold.

Also this is a manufacturers warranty, not a vendors warranty.
The rules are different.

No idea. Maybe a geographical area?

This *generally* means it was sold as OEM and you'd normally have
problems getting an RMA.

However, if it says "still in warranty" you should have no problems.

If you want to return it, create an online RMA. If it succeeds, you'll
get your replacement. If not, chances are you won't.

(I know Maxtor recently "upgraded" their warranty on all their drives
manufactured after some date in 2004 to a three-year warranty, even if
originally purchased with a 12-month warranty.)

'As OEM', not 'to OEM'. To OEM is a problem, to EMEA is not.
and you'd normally have problems getting an RMA.

Just means:
sold/delivered to (E)urope/(M)iddle (E)ast/(A)frica geographical region
of IBM/Hitachi. If you happen to live there you shouldn't have a problem.
However, if it says "still in warranty" you should have no problems.

If you want to return it, create an online RMA.
If it succeeds, you'll get your replacement.
If not, chances are you won't.

About 100% if you don't have anyone within IBM/Hitachi to bribe.

IIRC "EMEA" = "Europe, Middle-East, Asia" in IBMspeak.
Dunno what the "GEO" means.

EMEA = Europe - Middle East - Africa

The original message includes a header
"X-Complaints-To: (e-mail address removed)"
so it's fairly reasonable that the drive hasn't been "grey imported"
from somewhere else to EMEA. (BT Internet is a major UK ISP, a branch of the
main British internet backbone)

Oh, just a lucky guess, do the full check?

Pity you just said different 4 lines ago, babblebot.
But then that's just to be expected from babblebots.

As always. Never prevented you to babble madly.
Maybe a geographical area?

No, really?

(And in general too, as it appears)
But here I think they just refer to their support regions.

Dunno what the "GEO" means.

"Geography (Geo)– The geographical region, or Geo, to which the Business Partner belongs. Geographies include
Asia Pacific (AP), Europe,Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Latin America (LA) and North America (NA)."

Hello Folkert

Thank you very much for this link with their telephone numbers.

I just called them and they confirm I have a 3 year warranty.

They also clarified that with an invoice or other proof of purchase the
warranty starts from the date I receive them.

I queried that my invoice says 1 year warranty. They told me if I have a
problem with the drive within the first year then I should refer to the
dealer and after that period I should contact them directly.

Great news!

I can now happily open the packs and install my new drives.

**Thanks again to all of you for taking the time to reply.**

Regards

Ian I^)
