What's the best Cluster Size for Video editing?

S

SimMike-

Generally the bigger the cluster size, the better. But the data rate of DV video
is only 3.5 MB/s, which is childs play for todays fast drives, especially a RAID
array. I doubt if you could tell the difference in cluster size and video
performance. IMHO, the performance difference would be miniscule and certainly
not worth spending one bit of time worrying about. What will make more of a
difference is having a partition dedicated to video and occasionally formatting
this drive when you are finished with the video on your current project. Or at
minimum defragging the partition occasionally.

Extra memory, faster CPUs and hard drives will all dwarf cluster size
differences when it comes to performance gains.

Cluster size was an issue ten years ago when video editing was pushing the
maximum thru-put envelope of hard drives. Since this time, computers and drives
got so much faster that this is a non-issue.
