What would cause Primary IDE to revert to PIO mode?

I noticed my PC was acting like someone had poured glue into the works
today. Scanned for malware - nothing. Did a Perf. & Maint. clean
out/defrag, still the same. Even removed restore points.
Then I noticed that the Primary IDE, normally Ultra DMA Mode 5, was now PIO.
What would cause this?
I recently ran HDTune to check my HD and it's just fine.
Found a fix on the web and it's restored thank God, but still wondering
what's going on!!
I believe it's a no-no to uninstall that channel (in order to reboot and
allow Windows to reinstall) because then it would disable the system, am I
right?

All my other channels are normal.

IDE ATA and ATAPI disks use PIO mode after multiple
time-out or CRC errors occur

Thanks Wesley. It's the first time this has ever happened. The only
contrubuting factor I can think of is that I updated my BIOS yesterday
(forgot to mention that!)
Michna's quick fix restored it.

Thanks Carey,
It's back to where it should be now...Ultra DMA Mode 5.

Glad to hear it, Peter. Keep having fun. :-)

Happened again after doing a defrag of my external HD using Diskeeper 10
Pro. Turned out that the Maxtor drivers needed reinstalling - the disk
wasn't being read properly.
This time I uninstalled the Primary IDE Channel, rebooted and let Windows do
its thing.
