What will happen with Word and Office 2007

Coolmishu

It has been in news that Microsoft won't be able to continue provide services
with word 2007 and also office 2007 after 11 January 2010 due to recent
orders from court. Though Microsoft is saying they will come out with some
fix but any help what effects will the current face if MS do not come out
with a Fix or a patch.

If there's any truth to this, unless it was done by a World Court or
some sort of UN action, it is only valid in one country. What "news"
was it in?

Coolmishu,

There was a patent infringement case files against Microsoft. Microsoft
lost and then it lost the appeal. I don't know if you will find anyone
here that can give you a definitive answer at this point. But unless the
information that is available is completely off the mark, the problem should
not be as catastrophic as it may sound at first.

The case involved Microsoft's use of code developed by a Toronto Canada firm
named i4i that deals with custom XML in documents. See:

If your concerns are with the legality of your software, you're going to be
fine. The patch is to disable a seldom-used feature. I suspect we will see
that patch within the next week because Patch Tuesday is Jan 12.

If you are concerned about Microsoft's future, I'm sure they will be fine as
well. It'll take more than a tiny Canadian company to bring them down.

:: sigh ::

What dismays me is, with as many lawsuits as MS has lost for stuff like
this, they still do it.

And it sadly leaves me with the belief/impression that MS often doesn't seem
to think it has to follow the same rules as everyone else. :-(
