What to do to stop error msg: "Too many different cell formats"?

Working on quite large spreadsheet, I keep getting "Too many different cell
formats" error message — even when trying to make fairly simple changes to a
handful of cells. Once message has appeared, can't then even make single
change to single cell without it popping up again. Only workround is to quit
and restart programme. It happens repeatedly; it's driving me nuts.

Without stating the obvious. You'll need top cut down the number of cell
formats used. A format is *any* different part of a format, e.g size, font,
colour, bold, etc. You can cut these down by using styles. (Format>Styles)

If you cannot change anything, then, if you are on a version of XL pre-2002,
try opening in 2002/3 and make your changes and you should then be ok
