What should I do if the Office Assistant is distractiing?

Right click the office assistant and select Hide. Look for stuff in the
Tools -> Options dialog related to how often he pops up.

I haven't tried it, but if you run Microsoft Office Setup from Add/Remove
Programs, there might be an option to uninstall the assistant completely.

My personal favorite was a new office assistant that I found once where he
had a bullet hole between his eyes.

Yes. During custom installation I usually select "Never" (as opposed to "Run
from CD", "Install on 1st Use", etc.) for the Office Assistants. The only
time I see them is on the screens of co-workers.
