What kind of document is that? What program created it?

Any freeware that will open a .wps doc ?

There's a free MS viewer which claims to open these but when I d/l
and installed it, it opened but didn't read my .wps file and secondly
it screwed up my system by changing file associations for a range of
other files, installing a pile of MS files on a HDD partition which I
reserve exclusively for audio and creating dozens if not hundreds of
new reg keys/values, giving my registry a bad attack of bloat.

Quite unbelievable. In short another MS disaster program.

If you are using MS Word 2002, you should be able to open Works 2000
and Works 4.0 by just using the file open command in Word without any
installations at all. Of course if you file uses a version earlier
than this, you will have to resort to a conversion program.

I don't have MS Office/Word/Works or any other MS app s/w installed,
hence my need to get the free viewer from the MS site.

I don't know if this is what you want, but the Works 6.0 convertor wil
convert Works 4.X, 4.5, 2000 to Word 97, 2000 and XP.

It's here:

Also after installing I noticed I have choices for Works 3.0 in Word as
well. This is Word 2003. I think I got the filter for Works 3.0 in a
separate download or maybe because I have Works 7.0 installed on this
machine as well as Office.

[Another possible candidate]

Socrtwo, the word processor that you'd brought to my attention, Hieroglyph,
it offers opening of Works documents, so it might be something the OP could
investigate.

The proprietary formats I'm seeing Hieroglyph offer to open:

Windows Write
Works 4.0 for Windows
Works 2000
Word 6/95
Word 97/2002
Wordperfect 5x

I haven't tested rendering or conversion of such filetypes, but it would be
useful if somebody dealing with those could offer some feedback. Maybe the
OP of this thread, if its Works 4 or higher files involved in their project.

Hieroglyph Download Page:

Several choices for package to download, like with installer and extra files.
I'd chosen the smaller, no-install:
http://www.futura.ru/hg/hgzip37.zip - 1mb

My post after learning of and installing Hieroglyph:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.comp.freeware/msg/7156cfd526ad5b53?dmode=source
Post was basically a first look thingy. I've not tested using the program on
the opening of any proprietary word processing formats.

Note that while the website is Russian interface -- the program will install
with English interface, if this the language setting of your OS.
