What must I do to get gridlines printed for both filled and empty cells?

Hi,

What must I do to get gridlines printed for both filled and empty cells?
I'm a teacher, and I'm trying to replicate and print, in Excel, an
attendance book format, with a series of tiny squares next to each student's
name. The printed form of this would allow me to register if a student were
present or absent on a particular day.

I think I'd remove the gridlines (tools|options|view tab|uncheck gridlines

Then apply a border to all the cells I need to look like a box.

Select your range,
format|cells|border tab

I like that I can have more control over what should have a border and what
shouldn't.

Hi Dave,

Then apply a border to all the cells I need to look like a box.

Thanks for the reply. However, that didn't seem to work for me. I don't
know if it is because I didn't understand your reply, or if I hadn't posed
my question correctly.

In case it was the latter, let me express myself another way. I'd like to
create a printable grid which will print with a larger cells on the left for
the students' names, and smaller squares to the right for entering present
or absent.

Please excuse my ignorance. This is the first time I'm using Excel.
Thanks.

Each column can be resized.

Notice the line between C and D in the column header. Click on that line. Drag
it to the right or left and watch the columnwidth change.

Do this for column A (wider) and column B (skinnier).

Then select both column A and B and
format|cells|border tab

click on the Outline and Inside Presets and click ok.

Print a test sheet (just one, no need to kill a tree!)

And re-adjust the columnwidths to what you need.

Hi Dave,
Then select both column A and B and
format|cells|border tab
click on the Outline and Inside Presets and click ok.

Thanks! It worked! Amazing how simple things seem, when you've been given
good advice!

Now, I must admit I'm getting ambitious (or greedy, or both!), because I'd
like to know how to automatically resize any number of columns, without
having to do each one individually. Is that possible?

Point to the grey button at the top of the first column you want to resize
Hold the left mouse button, and drag across to the last column that you
want to resize
Then follow the steps that Dave described earlier, to resize a column:

"Notice the line between C and D in the column header. Click on that
line. Drag it to the right or left and watch the column width change."

All the selected columns will be resized to the same width.

OR, to resize the columns to fit the widest entry in each column,
double-click on the border between two of the selected column headings.
