hello,

I need to run experiments with a software that is working in the windows XP
environment. Within this experiment I need to have regular (and often)
positional information of the whereabouts of the mouse (that the subject who
will take part in the experiment will be moving around). I have heard that
the updating in windows (and DOS) of the mouseposition is infact rather slow,
as slow as only every 50 ms (20HZ) even, and has a low priority, which makes
also the reading time unreliable.

Can anyone tell me what the read frequency of the mouseposition REALLY is in
XP, and if there is any way for the windows user to change this to arrive at
every 5 ms (200HZ), which is what I aim for.

If there is no built in easy way for a user to control the read frequency of
the mouse, is there any way to change this in the program software (by a
skilled programmer) to improve this. Possibly is this something that can be
requested to Microsoft??

It'll depend on the connection (PS/2, USB..) and driver. Sometimes you
can overclock the mouse but it may mean you move have to move the mouse
a greater distance for equivalent screen movement.
