i have been running a program on my computer for months and its been working
fine. but the next day when i tried to start the program a windows box pops
up...title--16 bit windows subsystem....in the
box---c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for
runing MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications. choose 'close' to terminate
the application.....buttons--close and ignore (both close the program) i
changed nothing between the two days, what have i done to cause this? and how
do i correct this?

Here are two replies to autoexec.nt problems.

Error Message: MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based program
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_m.htm#16bit

This installation program will reinstall the missing or corrupt Windows XP
system files command.com, autoexec.nt and config.nt. The absence or
corruption of one or more of these files causes a "16 Bit Subsystem" error.

You can put back the standard version of autoexec.nt/config.nt by
copying a backup copy held in %windir%\repair\ to %windir%\system32\
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows) instead of using the procedure in
the KB article above.

Could be caused a trojan or something similar, e.g.
TrojanDownloader.Win32.Dia.a, more about this here:
http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

Also, AVAST (antivirus software) can be the cause if you
have WinXP SP2 installed:

Hi Lee,

Error message when you install or start an MS-DOS or 16-bit Windows-based
program
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324767

This should help resolve this common problem. Basically, you will have to
expand new copies of command.com, autoexec.nt, and config.nt to the system32
folder from the WinXP CD or I386 folder on your hard drive. Sometimes, you
need to create new ones and overwrite the existing ones - the method is
described in the article.

Ron and Rick have given you the solution.

However the problem may come back. There are some known viruses that
delete or corrupt this file as part of their infestation. So you need
to make certain that your antivirus software is fully up to date with
the virus definitions not more than a week old and do a complete virus
scan of your hard drive.

Good luck
