What is the "special functionality" of Outlook's desktop icon?

When I select "delete" for Outlook XP desktop icon it warns about the loss of
"special functionality" in the desktop icon instead of just asking if I want
to delete it.

Is this bogus, or is there some useful feature to this icon beyond starting
Outlook?

It isn't a shortcut. If you right click on it, go to properties, you'll see
why it's different.
If you don't want it, delete it- you can always use control panel | mail to
get to the info/features.
