What is the raw text editor of choice? (TextPad??)

Hi
Textpad seems to have a bit of a following as a raw ASCII editor...
I use a very old version of TextPad (v3.2.5), which I am toying
with upgrading at some point - though I'm now quite used to
it and it does most things I need...

Any views on what the text editor of choice would be
for basic text data manipulations.

Need so open fast,
allow column editing
column sorting
UK spell check
Search & replace etc

Any views?

I really like all the features in UltraEdit.

http://www.ultraedit.com

From that site:
UltraEdit is a shareware program. If you find it useful and continue to use it
after the 45 day trial period, you are obligated to purchase/register it with
the author.

A single user license costs $35. Registration of UltraEdit does entitle the user
to FREE upgrades for one year.

And I bet I use about 10% of all the features.

How is this possibly on-topic in this newsgroup?

FWLIW, I use TextPad now along with vim. TextPad mostly, but pervers
search & replace operations are more efficiently done in vim. If you'r
especially perverse, you may enjoy EMACS.

Just like with spreadsheets, you shouldn't limit yourself to just on
text editor (especially not Notepad)

Sure.

There are lots of good free editors out there. I like OSS one's that
work on any platform. jEdit is quite good, (and is OSS) with a plethora
of plugins, for many programming languages.

If one is using GNU, then vi(m), gnus are quite good. Another good one
for MickeySoft Windows only, is Crimson Editor.

Ciao for now.
