What is the "extend.dat" Outlook file for?

I'm making backups of the Outlook files needed if I reformat or have a HDD
crash or whatever, and I'm not sure if i should include "extend.dat". What is
this file for and should I back it up along with my pst, nk2, and xml files?
 
If I remember right it keeps track of extensions & such but Outlook
recreates it if it's missing. Deleting it is the cure for a number of ills
so not backing it up shouldn't hurt much.
