What is 'Proxy Desktop - End Program' when shutdown hangs?

If I use 'Search' in explorer.exe the PC hangs when shutting down displaying
'End Program, Proxy Desktop'

I know the search in XP is supposed to be a bit flaky (it does not find some
files I know are present) but I did not know it had an adverse effect on
shutdown. Some desktop shortcuts also stop working after I have used the
search.

Anyone else had this or know how to fix it.

It actually sounds to me like you've got some sort of hijacker on board.
Remove spyware with Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de
and Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode.

I had the same exact problem and I have norton AntiVirus and Ad-awar
and they didn't find anything. Also I can't find it in my process.
Same problem with the desktop
