Some people told me that this discussion group format is not so great and to
use Outlook Express. I just thought that was a different variation of
Outlook. What is this Outlook Express and how wonderful is it?

They're probably referring to using a newsreader (often known as NNTP access
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NNTP or Usenet) rather than the web format, via
a browser, to access the forums.

Outlook is a more robust and feature-rich email client than its (free)
cousin Outlook Express. However, Outlook uses Outlook Express for its
newsreading features.

I personally much prefer NNTP access to forums. I find it faster and more
efficient for my way of doing things.

Note: you're not limited to Outlook Express for NNTP access (or newsreading)
though. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_news_clients for options.
