Is myway.com part of yahoo? I checked in Goggle and still really do not a
clear explanation.
I am new to XP...I had a window pop up on my computer saying that there
was an error in Microsoft Internet Explorer, and that I should disable an
add-on. How am I supposed to know what is a legitimate site and what
is not?
One of the addresses listed in my add-on was (not verified) myway.com.
I would appreciate some help, at least for this particular site. Should I
disable it?
Thanks in advance for any help

myway.com is a money making part of askjeeves. If you don't believe me -
just ask jeeves.

NO ! Myway is a parasite. I'm going to point to an article at Aumha on ways to cleanup parasites.
Follow the quick-fix protocol.

To add protection for your Internet Explorer browser, there's IE-Spyad which will help to really reduce damage from questionable website.
To read more on it, see <https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm#IESPYAD>

Sorry, jumped the gun on this one. It does appear that myway.com is owned by Ask Jeeves. Retracting my earlier comment about myway.com.

Cindy, Be very careful of getting any unknown toolbars from unknown sources.

To all of you that have been so kind to help me:

Well....I thought I was reasonably intelligent:-), I have had a computer
for years, but just switched from ME to a new Dell with XP. The 'add-one'
as I remember, was not on ME, so this is new to me.
Sorry, but I am still confused, I just ran Spybot, Ad-Ware and Spyware
Blaster, I have Zone Alarm, and AVG running on my computer. I clicked
on the link you have listed below, and it just seems to be part of askJeeves
which I occasionally use.

Wayne as well as CTLouisiana pointed out - myway.com is a money making part
of askjeeves. If you don't believe me -
just ask jeeves. This looks harmless to me to not remove
myway.com from my add-on's
Maurice is saying it is parasite - so...... do I just leave it on my
add-on's as I do not see that is hurting my computer or do I delete it
from my add-on's. It looks easy enough to disable it, should I do this?.
Thanks again

Thank you Maurice - I see your comment, I think unless I am advised
otherwise I will just leave it on the add-ons. I am trying NOT to do a
'security overkill' by adding more and more programs that I may not need.
I think my provider Cox also blocks a lot of bad stuff that tries to come
in.
Why I got the window popup about add-ons, I have no idea. As all of us
have been told many times, 'it is just a computer' and 'computer's are not
always right'.

Cindy,

Here is another link for scanning/blocking spyware/malware:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

It sounds like your homepage may have been hijacked. If that is the case,
just find a homepage that suits you and set it as your homepage and then use
some anti-spyware program to find the nasties and delete them.

I used Excite in the past as my homepage until I discovered that almost all
the anti-spyware software listed it as a nasty - i.e. they added tracking
cookies to my computer.

I used to use IE-Spyad before MS made their anti-spyware program available.
I've found the MS product easier and more convenient than IE-Spyad. You can
schedule scans and you can have it auto-update. From what I've seen in the
grc newsgroups that the MS product is actually well reviewed and most people
seem to like it.

Sorry, but I am still confused, I just ran Spybot,...

If you open the Settings tab in SpyBot SD and click on Ignored Products
then scroll down the list you may very well find myway.com listed and
checked to be ignored along with a few other products. Un-tick them
and run SpyBot again. For some reason there are some SpyBot update
sites that are ticking a few products to ignore so to be on the safe
side always check the ignore lists after an update. I found myway
ticked after updating it recently.

Rob

I just ran SpyBot again. the screen says Congratulations!!! No
immediate threats were found. I do not see where I would find 'ignored
products'. I did not see ignored products listed in the help file either.
And yes I did check for updates before running the program. I am using the
free version..

I [...] just switched from ME to a new Dell with XP.

I am "glad" that someone else experienced the same
problem with a new Dell XP. I am certain that Dell
installed the "myway" software, although their Help
Desk insists they simply install Win XP from MS.

You might try removing the "My Way Search Assistant"
program (Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add or
Remove Programs). But a google search revealed that
that did not work in the past. And recent comments
suggest that it still might not work.

I finally removed it using Hijack This. I believe it
removed entries from the registry.

Eventually, I realized that I wanted to disable browser
searching from the Address bar. In IE, click Tools /
Internet Options / Advance and select "Do not search
from the Address bar". I did not even like going to
auto.search.msn.com.

That, alone, might be sufficient to disable the "myway"
search. I never tried it because I treated "myway"
like a trojan horse first, out of ignorance.

You may get window popups shortly after you update ZoneAlarm if this is
what you have done. There is a new version just out so look those settings
also.

You don't have to shout. The whole process is a matter of strategy. It is
not a simple issue. You log on to a site that only allows you to if you
agree to accept their tracking cookie. You agree then remove the cookie
after you depart from that site. If any spyware is downloaded and removed
immediately it will not accomplish it's mission. You can scan for adware at
boot time or any time. You just have to know how to practice safe internet
with out getting screwed. I have used Zone Alarm Pro and PestPatrol for
years along with AVG. 7.0 never have an problems. Also Email protection with
Spamex.com.

Simplest way to decide is to ask yourself if you were asked to install it. Some
spy ware will ask you or for that matter DEMAND you install active-x control
xxx before proceeding.
Chances are anything you need to access the web is already installed in your
browser or OS. Especially true now with win XP.

Think of adware as relatives that won't go home. they'll eat up all the
computer resources and give you nothing back but a slow machine.

The complete lack of info on what it is, or how to remove it should be a dead
giveaway that they want it on your machine more than you do. Weatherbug is a
real good example of this. Their removal link [on the web] is a 404 not found
web page.

I never noticed My Way before this thread, so when you mentioned
add/remove - I looked... and there it was. It must have come bundled
with something else on my new computer, because we use Google. So,
I'd like to know how it got here... IE perhaps?

Time to run AdAware!

I'm easily confused... how is this different from the MVP HOSTS file?
Is it exclusive to IE?

IE-Spyad IS exclusively for IE (versions 4 to 6). As Eric Howes writes on his page, "IE-SPYAD adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known advertisers, marketers, and crapware pushers to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. "

The MVP Hosts file has a list of totally blocked sites, which cannot be accessed at all by the client pc.
