What # is my pc dailing?

Greetings,
I use UPS software and am in a rural area where there is no local number to
use for reports, etc. There is a toll-free number to use for this situation.
However, I wonder sometimes if the software reverts back to the non-
toll-free numbers which would result in my incuring long distance charges.
Is there some way I can tell what phone number my pc is dailing? I thought
of the "event viewer", but I am not sure about that yet. I know that I can
look on my phone bill, but I want to know the pc question as well. Any
suggestions?
Thanks,
Jim

Who makes your UPS software?
What do they say about it?

Or when you say "UPS" are you talking about the shipping company?
Although - same question. ;-)

Easiest way is to check with your phone company
to verify if any calls have been placed using the
non toll free number.

Go into the software and check the number that is dialed. I am sure there
is a place where the number can be configured and stored. Check the
documentation if necessary.

First I was thinking of Uninterruptible Power Supply. After reading your
question, shipping company makes more sense in this case. Why would a UPS
(battery software) call to send reports? I agree with other replies that the
software maker is the right person to ask.

Yes: configure yourself two dial-up numbers: the ebook manual
WindowsXP Inside Out recommends:
" If you set up multiple connection icons, one for your usual dial-up
number and another for numbers you use when traveling, label
each one clearly: MSN (Home), and MSN (Dallas), for instance. "

Sorry I wasn't a specific as I thought. United Parcel Service, and I don't
know who makes their software. There is a way to configure what numbers to
use, but every time I go back and check to see if it is set right, it has
changed to the non toll-free numbers, although I don' t think it has dialed
to those non toll free numbers yet, however, that is the reason for my
asking if there is a way to tell what number the pc is dialing. The software
has to get online occasionally for updates, rate changes, and to send
billing info. It uses a UPS network via the number I set up. It is not thru
my isp.
Thanks

Don, Thanks for your response. Would you read my response to Shenan and see
if that changes your response?

Call United Parcel Service software support. They know all about their
software settings.

So their software dials up a number...

Doesn't really change the answer - this is not a Microsoft package. I have
installed the UPS (brown, shipping company) shipping software before - so I
know they have technical support - and I am afraid that would be your best
bet for support using their software/their dialing parameters.. ;-)

Here is another idea for you, if you don't get anywhere with finding the
number in the UPS software.

The idea is to look up the number, as you say, in your phone bill.

Write it down.

Then, open up [regedit.exe] by typing it into the "Run" box on the 'Start
Menu'.

On the topmost menus select 'Edit' > 'Find' and type the phone number into
the search-box and click on [ok]

When the number is found you will then know where it is kept in the
registry.

Choose 'File' > 'Export' while you can still see the [phone] number in
regedit and save the file to somewhere memorable on your computer.

Every time you want to make sure that the UPS software is dialling the right
number, double-click on the file you have saved, and this will re-set the
value you saw back into the registry.

As long as you don't re-set any values while you are in regedit and all you
do is export a value, there is nothing wrong in using the registry editor -
despite some other people's scare mongering!

Make the problem and question go away by instructing the UPS software to
connect via the internet instead of using a dial-up modem. The UPS technoids
can help you with the setup.
