What is Microsoft .net, and why would I need it?

I can't really understand all the geekness in the description MS puts out on
their web site. I don't use messenger, but I do have a home network.
Is that what .net is all about?

Should I be using MS 2003 net server? Is it installed over XP? Or does
it replace XP?
