What Is IP Routing? And how do I get my own external IP?

What basically is IP Routing? Will it allow me to have my own personal
external IP address other than my routers? If so can someone guide me through
the process of doing that? I need an easy way to make my computer have its
own external IP so I can have people like my family and friends connect to a
website hosted on my computer instead of the IP of which my network is. What
do I have to do to get my own external IP?

The IP routing capability in Windows XP won't do what you want. It
lets a computer that has connections to more than one local area
network transfer data between the networks.

But you don't need to use IP routing, and your computer doesn't need
its own external IP. Other people can access it using the external IP
address of your router. That generally requires:

1. Signing up with a dynamic DNS service (such as www.dyndns.org) to
assign a publically-accessible name to your router's WAN (Internet)
interface.

2. Assigning a static IP address to your computer, in the same subnet
as your router's LAN interface, but outside the router's DHCP pool.
For example, if the router's DHCP server assigns 192.168.1.101 to
192.168.1.151 to computers, assign 192.168.1.200 to your computer.

3. Configuring your router to forward HTTP traffic (Port 80) to your
computer's LAN IP address.

And be aware that hosting a web site is in violation
of many ISP's terms & conditions and can lead to
termination of your account.

If this is really imprtant to you, have your site hosted -
can be done for approx. $20 / month or less.
