what is i386 folder for? searching for worms....

I have an i386 folder on my harddrive that is in my HP computer. Is i386
a folder that HP puts on ? I have been trying to get the Symantecs worm
removal tools to work but the Microsoft Error Reporting program always
comes up and says there is an error with appcompat.txt that is on the
harddrive , but when I do a search or file find for that file, it can't
find it. Also if I used Windows Explorer and go to the folder that it is
in, it does no show up cause the folder is not even showing up ... the
weird thing is that the Symantec worm removal tool stops on the
icwdial.ch file in the i386 folder...

can someone shed some light on this?

The I386 folder contains the majority of the XP install files. If you
decide to add or remove Windows components, then this is where XP will look.
Its also the repository for files for the System File Checker and Windows
File Protection.

Normally that is the folder of system components, put on the drive for
the maker to install the system from it (rather than from a CD). If the
files in it all have extensions ending with a _ that is what it is
