What is ASPNET?

Can any one tell me what ASPNET is?
This has turned up as a "Restricted user" on several of our W2000
machines. No one has knowingly added this user.
The description given is:
"Account used for running the ASP.NET worker process (aspnet_wp.exe)"
Is this MS spyware?
Puzzled.
