What is an SM bus controller?

I just did a clean install of Win XP Pro that includes service pack 1, and
after installing all the drivers for my cards, I still have a yellow
question mark for "other devices" in device manager with an SM bus
controller listed with another yellow question mark and an exclamation mark.
It wasn't there before I did the reinstall, and there are no new cards on
the system. I have done several clean installs previously and have never
seen this item.
Can anyone please tell me what it is and what is going on?
I have an Asus P4c800-e motherboard and only have my agp video card, a
soundblaster card and a Canopus ADVC1394 analogue/firewire card on the
system.
Thanks for any help with this.

It's the chipset driver for your motherboard. It's available at Asus or
Intel.

Hi,

To resolve the issue, please update the motherboard driver
from the driver disc or contact the vendor for driver
update.

Hope this help!

Raj

What do you have that's missing? My PC shows that for the Sound Card because
XP doesn't have a driver for my card. It goes away when I install the driver
manually.

Do you have the P4C800-E Deluxe? That mother board has a built-in SATA-RAID
controller. You can install the Promise drivers from the CD or perhaps
download them from Asus.

By the way, that board also has a built-in firewire port.

My P4C800-E system has this listed under system devices:
Intel(R) 82801EB SMBus Controller - 24D3
I think it's for Serial ATA, which I don't use yet. The driver
should have come with your motherboard.

Just out of curiosity, did you have problems with the 1394
controller that's built into your motherboard? Or do you need
the Canopus 1394 board only for its analogue capabilities?
Thanks.

It was the intel inf file that needed to be installed from the asus cd.
as for the other motherboard components, I don't use the promise or sata or
lan or audio or firewire integrated stuff yet.
I do video editing on avid and I needed a simple stable configuration.
i imagine that i will make use of sata controllers later when i have some
sata drives. currently the primary and secondary ide controllers are
sufficient for me.
