what is an objective when making a resume

I dumped the objective on my resume years ago. I now use a summary of my
skills/work history.
 
To get a job.

No need to sigh. A stated objective is an important part of some
resumes, and many companies ask for it. It's not, of course, the
immediate goal of getting the job you are applying for, but a more
general short to medium term career objective.
