What is a VST ?

This may well not be the right place to ask this, but can anyone tell me
what a VST is? I assume its related to audio in XP, but what is it and what
does VST stand for (mean) ?

if you are talking about the "file extension" of ".vst" than more than
likely it is a "visio template"
(Visio being a Microsoft program)

VSTs are audio effect plugins used from within audio hosts (Digital audio
editing programmes). There are various flavours in which digital audio
plugins appear - there are DX (directX) plugins, VST, RTAS etc. formats.
While DX plugins are supported by virtually every host, the other formats
are supported by just a little portion of professional programmes. E.g. the
programme SoundForge distrubuted by Sony only supports DX. There are,
however, DX2VST and VST2RTAS adapters on the market, which allow to use
different formats even in programmes that don't support a wide variety of
formats by themselves.
