What is a client

Forgive me for a probably stupid or naive question but why are programs
called "clients"? Why is Netscape an "e-mail client"? and not an email
program as it used to be? Any rational explanation besides the
fashionable tendancy to use fancy words for simple things?

Your ISP usually runs the mail server. You use a mail client such as
Outlook, Eudora, etc. to connect to the sever to retrieve your mail.
