What is a .bak file type?

I have a database that I have been using the entire year. Now in the folder
I have a copy of that database with the ".bak" extension & when I try to open
it I get an error. Does anyone know what this file type refers to??

There are a couple of situations that will create a copy of your database
with a bak extension. One is if you ever ran the security wizard on the
mdb. Is your database secured?

What is the error message?
