What is a "501 maximum recipient count exceeded" error?

Just lately I get the "501 maximum recipient count exceeded" error when
sending a BBC from my distribution list in outlook. What does this mean and
how can I fix it?

It's a message from your server telling you to reduce the number of people
in the recipient list. Outlook itself doesn't have a known limit.
