Hi sara,
you have to use Outlook 2003 to use the unicode formatted pst file.
So if you are using Outlook 97-2002 why don´t you use the archive function
to minimize your pst file?

Make sure Outlook is closed then...

Create a new Unicode PST file:
- go to the Control Panel's Mail applet
- Choose Email Accounts
- Choose View/Change Existing accounts
- Click Next
- Click New Outlook Data file and create a Unicode (Office Outlook) PST file
- Set the "Deliver New Mail..." dropdown to point to your new PST file
- Start Outlook. It should create the basic folder
- Make sure your old PST is on the folder tree. If not use the File menu >
Open > Outlook Data File
- Drag and drop items from old PST to new PST. Move the items from the
Contacts, Calendar & Tasks folder since you can't move those folders from
one PST to the other
- Close old PST when done
