what has to stay read-only?

Hi, while trying to do something else, I was in C:\documents and
settings\owner, and after selecting all, I accidentally unclicked the
"read-only" box. After I realized that may not be a good move, I reclicked
it. By that time, however, I no longer had access to my email, the ability to
search in IE or foxfire, etc. That all works now that I unclicked it again,
but I am concerned that some files in that file may NEED to be read-only. Can
anyone tell me which computer files HAVE to be read only?

Temp files in the profile directory often are marked as read-only.
Although there may have been other files that had the attribute,
marking them all as not read-only will not have a detrimental affect.
