what happened to release

what happened to being able to compile my app as Release version?

Nothing "happened" to that.

You can do it, anytime, by setting <compilation debug="false"/>
in your application's web.config.

If not having it makes you feel lonely, you can always download the Web
Application project add-in which returns it back to you. I prefer them anyway
- by a long shot.

Otherwise, publish your site and as Juan indicated, just make sure the debug
flag in web.config =false.
