what happend to the data on my 250gig hd?

Hi,
I have a 250gig hd as the 2nd hd in my winxp pro system. It was
almost completely full of files. All was fine with the drive but i
had some problems with the system so I clean installed windows xp
pro on the first hd. I had just finished installing windows (pre sp1)
and looked in the drive. Nothing was in the drive. It should
it was empty, and showed 250 gigs(well really 233 ntfs partition).
So i rebooted and chkdsk started and said it had to check the drive,
so i let it run. It found like 200,000 bad indexes and other errors.
Windows restarted and a few of the original folders showed up
in the drive. Many recovered folders showed up too, but were
just blank icon files, so i didn't do anything to them.
I just deleted the partition. I have used 'recover my files' before
with some success but a 40gig drive i recovered took 30 hrs to
complete, so i wasn't excited about a 250 gig drive, nor did i
have the space to recover the files to.
Anyway, I tried to format and realized that pre sp1 windows
only supports 133 gig hds. Installing sp1 let me format to the
full size.
I am over that I lost all my files but in the future, should i worry
that i may lose my files again if i don't install sp1 right away or
disconnect the drive while i am installing windows? or did
the drive just really have problems and reinstalling windows
just made them affect the drive?

Thanks,
chuck

If you had waited till your system was fully
updated/patched I think you would not have seen this
problem.

Next time wiat till all operating system updates/patches
have been installed before searching around your pc.
Having Very large drives does create problems, if you
forget
about that size limit..

You should have waited to check the large drive till you had XP SP1
installed. It is REQUIRED for drives larger than 137Gb and 48-bit LBA must
be invoked.

Your new install probably did not recognize that the new
user account did not "own" the previous files.
