Two Windows XP Pro computers connected with a crossover cable.

File and Printer Sharing turned on both. Windows Firewall likewise. Both
have one shared folder, each set with all required permissions for both
users.

First machine uses a Wireless Broadband Modem to connect to the Internet.
This connection is shared. Second machine is set to acquire IP address
automatically.

Both machines can access the Internet fine.

They can also see the respective shared folders. But cannot access them -
the standard Windows error message comes up referring to denied permissions.

I can run the Create Network Connection Wizard to enable the computers to
access each other again. Then they work perfectly.

Till the first machine is shut down.

Then I have to run the Network Wizard all over again, after restarting it!

Any suggestion would be very welcome and appreciated.

Regards and thanks.

What is the complete and exact "denied permissions" message? This comes in many
variants.

One of the most common causes of this problem would be a misconfigured or
overlooked personal firewall, or other security component. There are several
other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your problem. Read this
article with an open mind.

Or you can look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and
"net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read
this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download

I have seen weird problems when using a crossover cable. Some onboard (VIA
Rhine in particular) ethernet ports sometimes don't initialise properly and
all sorts of weird symptoms show up. The fact that the problem occurs after
a shut down may indicate something like this is happening. My recommendation
would be to install a cheap switch and get rid of the crossover cable before
trying anything else.

Curiously I heard the sme yesterday while talking with an associate.

I am working out a routing with these two machines in a manner that I know
does work. Very simply, I will now take care to see that the first machine
is either always on or the first to be powered up. That way seems to work
everytime.

Regards and thanks.

Thanks for the response. The error message is:

"MSHome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network
resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have
access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available."

The weird part is that there is no interruption in accessing the Internet
from the second machine though the first even though the two machines cannot
access each other's folders.

I am working out a routine where the first computer is always either on or
the first to be powered up. That seems to be the way it always works.

Regards and thanks.

Manual procedures are fine, if you're happy.

If you want to know how to fix the problem, diagnose the problem. Read the
linked articles.

Browser problems (and I'm not discussing Internet Explorer either) are not
related to Internet access - the browser is for local, named access.
