what DVD burner and media

D

Don Jough

If I was going to buy a CD burner I'd get the Liteon 5239 and TY or Ritek
media based on my experience. However, I don't have enough experience with
DVD burners. What is the most reliable and dependable DVD burner and what
about media in 25 or 50 piece quantities?

TIA

I recently bought a NEC dvd burner and some Sony discs.

coaster!!!!

As you can see from the posts thus far, the NEC 3540 is the winner.
It's only $50 from newegg shipping included. You can't go wrong with
this unit, whereas you can go wrong with some others.

The rule that served me well with CDs was they must be made in Japan.
Taiyo Yuden was the best of the best. The same appears to be true of
DVDs although some Taiwanese companies are beginning to turn out
quality products.

If the project is mission critical, get Taiyo Yuden DVDs - also
branded by FujiFilm. We have never gotten a coaster with them.

If it's everyday stuff then you can get cheap crap from Worst Buy, but
plan to burn it at one speed lower than its designation. Also run the
Verify in DVD Decryptor - it will catch bad burns. I had 2 bad burns
out of about 25 with MemorWreacks crap from WB. They were 8x but I
burnt them at 4x and they still threw out a couple coasters. But they
were so cheap that I came out ahead.

As far as other brands, you need to consult the many forums on the NEC
burner, assuming you get it. That's another reason for the NEC - it is
the most widely supported burner on the market.

Let us know what you do.

of concerns, framing of issues, filtering of information, emphasis
and tone, and by keeping debate within the bounds of acceptable premises."

I only use optical media to archive and preserve data, if it's not important
it lives on a hard drive.
Let us know what you do.

I just ordered the 3540A for $42 with free shipping from newegg and a 50
pack of 16x TY media for $32 with shipping from rima.com.

Thanks for your help!

I just bought some FujiFilm DVD -R discs at Sam's Club. Since I have
my son's old Sony 8x burner, I bought 8x discs. They cost me $19.50
for 50.

I used Nero to identify the manufacturer and it was not Taiyo Yuden.
It is a company in Taiwan named ProdiscF01.

Meritline is another low-cost supplier of DVD discs, including TY.
Thanks for your help!

Let us know how it works out.

Sorry to hear that. My new TY media came packaged in the same ol' (50 piece)
spindle and once upon a time, that was how you could tell before buying
whether or not it was TY media.

Here's what SmartBurn 3110 has to say about the media:

Drive Type = DVD DUAL
Disc Type = DVD-R (Single Layer)
Disc MID = 54 59 47 30 33 00 (TYG03.)
Disc TID = 00 00 00 00 00 00 (......)
Nominal Capacity = 7.95GB
Manufacturer Maybe = Taiyo Yuden Company Limited
SMART-BURN Speed Limit = 16.0X (Write)

I've burned 2 so far, at 16x, one 4.07 GB and the other 3.87 GB, using the
latest version of Nero and no problems what so ever.

Thanks for the help!

Ritec media are good stuff, as for burners many are the same thing i
a different box, my LG works fine, Pioneer and Sony also get a goo
rap

Just remember to read the fine print regarding DVD burners, all, t
the best of my knowledge burn 4 disks, and whatever the region of th
last one is will lock the burner at that region, making it unable t
use ever again on another region disk

A right click in My Computer on your burner icon will show where yo
stand on how many times you have left on whatever region, it pats t
check it as a stuck burner is good only for tossing if stuck on
different region than your country

Best go is to burn only your own countries region disks, that makes i
simpler to not worry about your "any" burner locking "permanently" a
the 4th disk's region which is burnt

The amount of people with stuck burners that work only on one regio
is unable to count, the retailers will not tell you about the 4t
disk permanent disk region locking feature that all have, b
advised

There is a way around that, with the applet DVD43free it not onl
removes the copyright encryption making it able to copy 99% of disks
but it makes the source disk invisible to the burner thus making i
able to burn any region disk for an unlimited time

I use 1 click DVD s/w and the DVD43free applet together, any region a
many times as you want, no problems so far after well over 50 Rite
disks burnt

If the Fuji spindle reads "Made in Japan", it's very likely TY. If it reads
"Taiwan", all bets are off.

I have some Fuji 8x -R made in Taiwan by Prodata. They work at 8x with
my stock NEC 3540.
