What does WMI logging do?

I'm running XP Home with SP2, all updates installed. After looking
around for the cause of my hard drive's light continually flickering, I
discovered that the source was ongoing WMI logging. I disabled it and
the flickering stopped. Can any of the MVPs here tell me what purpose
the logging serves? Will it hurt anything to turn it off?

TIA

Thanks Carey, but that doesn't apply to me. I didn't have verbose
logging selected at any point and it isn't activated by default anyway.

Frankly, I don't understand why WMI is needed on my *single-user,
non-LAN computer* anyway. I wish Microsoft would make all the networking
portion of Windows optional. It's just bloat IMO.

But to get back to my original questions, what purpose does WMI logging
serve? Will it hurt anything to turn it off?
