Hi,

I have just seen this on my XP Pro box

hiberfil.sys file is 1,048.100KB and dated 1.51 pm on August 3rd

pagefile.sys 786,432 1.51pm Aug 3rd.

It is now August 17.

What do those figures mean?

Thanks

hiberfil.sys is the image file created when Windows goes into
Hibernate mode.

pagefile.sys is the Windows paging file (a.k.a. swap file) used to
supplement the physical RAM in your computer.

Hiberfil.Sys is the "Hibernation Storage File". When a PC enters
hibernation it writes it's current operating state to this file. When
the PC wakes up, it doesn't have to do a full boot - but simply
loads the state contents from Hiberfil.to resume work/use from
where it was at Hibernation time.

Pagefile.Sys is a Swap File. It works like a Filling Cabinet. It keeps
recent work or inactive work stored on the drive instead of RAM.
When the data is called for XP moves it from the Pagefile back into
RAM for use. It's like having an extension of the available memory
for your PC, just significantly slower than true physical RAM. So
if your PC has 256 Megabytes of RAM, a pagefile simulates more
RAM allowing the PC to take on a bigger load or do more things
than the 256 Megabytes would normally allow.

Thank you guys.

Understand now.

As the hibernate file is so long ago, could I delete it as it quite large?

I understand the pagefile I should not touch.

Thanks
