What does the X-P backup utility really back up?

I have Windows X-P home edition on a dell dimension 8200, And i was
wondering,
When I backup system state using the Backup Utility, What does it really
back up?
"Everthing that I need to start up the computer"?.... Or just the files
that I don't need
after booting, Just wondering,.....Thanks for all your
