What does "Shell Extensions\Approved" registry key do?

What does the following key in the rgeistry do? It has a list of
entries.

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions
\Approved

Some shell extensions in other parts of the registry appear in this
list of "approved" entries and some of those shell extensions do not.

What does that key do?

But then again, make a do and along comes an undo. <w>
