What does "import foreign disk" actually do?

When I put a dynamic disk from in another computer running windowxp pro, the
disk manager showed it as a foreign disk. I imported it and can see/use it
now.

What does "import disk" actually do? Does it modify the foreign disk? Is
there any down side to importing a foreign disk? If not, why won't windowsxp
just import it automatically?
